Fascinating, comprehensive and early work on penal reform and prison architecture in Switzerland. It covers, in some detail, aspects of the history penal reform in St. Gallen up to 1839 (when the St. Jacob prison was built); an overview of the prison’s design and architecture; statistics; health and mortality; occupational therapy; finance; matters of a disciplinary nature; religion and a comparison to the ‘auburn’sche und pensylvanische’ penal systems.

Overall excellent condition. Paper fault neatly restored (at time of publication) to one page. A few minor clean tears to over large tables and lithographs where bound in.
