Carte u Golphe de Mexique et des Isles d’Amerique (..)

Sheet size: ca 42 x 31 cm. (16,5 x 12,2 inch). Image size: 37 x 28 cm. (14,6 x 11 inch).

From a Dutch edition of Prevost’s monumental work: ‘Historische Beschryving der Reizen […]’, published in Amsterdam by E. van Harrevelt and d. J. Changuion, 1777.

Original antique map of the West Indies, Central America, and the Gulf of Mexico. The routes of the Spanish conquistadors are shown: the voyage taken by Ponce de Leon in 1512 in discovering Florida, the route taken by Hernandez de Corboda in 1517 from which the first European accounts of the Yucatan peninsula were compiled, and the route taken by Hernan Cortes in 1519 in embarking upon an expedition that resulted in the Conquest of Mexico.

Jakob van der Schley (Amsterdam 1715-1779) was a Dutch draughtsman and engraver. He studied under Bernard Picart and became heavily influenced by his style.
