Jakob van der Schley era un abile disegnatore e incisore che operava ad Amsterdam e aveva forti legami con L'Aia. È stato addestrato da Bernard Picart e il suo stile ricorda quello dell'uomo più anziano. Van der Schely era noto per i ritratti e i frontespizi finemente incisi. Ha firmato la maggior parte delle tavole utilizzate nell'edizione dell'Aia della Histoire generale des Voyages dell'abate Prevost.
