The Zurich military society ("Gesellschaft der Constafleren und Feurwerkern im Zeughause zu Zürich"), Zurich's preeminent military company at the time, set itself the task of training a powerful basic unit through regular exercises. The government supported the effort by granting ammunition and equipment.

After Joh. Meyer's death, Johann Melchior Füßli took over the production of New Year's copper for the Zurich companies, including that of the Constaffler between 1709 and 1723.
