Joseph Barth (1745/46-1818) was professor of anatomy and ophthalmology at the University of Vienna and from 1776 imperial personal physician. The masterly anatomical representations of this "excellent study work" were made by the important engraver, Kilian Ponheimer, d. Ä. (1757-1828), who specialized in the illustration of scientific works.
