Camées Artistiques

Complete issue, c. 1887

4 pages, including both a photographic portrait (after Nadar by Goupil) and extensive biography of Juliette Simon-Girard.

Juliette-Joséphine Simon-Girard (8 May 1859 – 1954) was a French soprano, principally in operetta.

The original photograph is in so-called Photoglyptie or Woodburytype.

Woodburytypes produce very high quality continuous tone images in monochrome, with surfaces that show a slight relief effect. The process was introduced by the English photographer Walter B. Woodbury and was in use during the final third of the 19th century, most commonly for illustrating fine books with photographic portraits. It was ultimately displaced by halftone processes that produced prints of lower quality but were much cheaper.
