Joseph Thomas Fassbind (1755-1824) lived in Schwyz and studied in Einsiedeln, Bellinzona, Como, and Besançon. In 1798, he was found guilty of treason for his resistance to the Helvetic civic oath and sentenced to twelve years of exile in the Engelberg monastery. His "History of Schwyz," written between 1791 and 1803, is the first attempt to record all the "worth-knowing and remarkable events" of the region. It begins with the question of the origins of the Schwyzers and ends in the third volume with a detailed account of the battles against the French in 1798. Fassbind describes not only the political history but also the demographic, social, and economic peculiarities of the Old Canton of Schwyz. The five-volume history was published by Pastor Kaspar Rigert in 1832 on Fassbind's behalf.
