"Eauweck, Hoofd-Stad van Cambodia" (Longvek)

Overall size of sheet: 25 x 37.7 cm.

Published ca 1770.

Old antique plan of the town of Lawec in Cambodia halfway along the Mekong River on the way to Phnom Penh. The Dutch East India Company set up a trading post at Lauweck in 1620, but the trade there proved disappointing, and just two years later the company shut the post down. A new Lawec trading post was opened in 1636, and then sold to the British in 1651, with disruption caused by the Anglo-Dutch Wars. Meanwhile from 1636 to 1670 the Dutch merchants lived at Udong on a semi-permanet basis, but in 1667 the Company left Cambodia.

Traces of folds, as issued. Excellent condition. Minor dusting to surface.

This north looking bird's-eye view of Santo Domingo shows sailing ships and sailboats in the harbour and the city stretched out to the horizon. The fortified city is protected by the sea and the Isabelle River with a complex of walls, towers and a wide moat. The central plaza features the cathedral and some poor soul has been hung in the gallows on the southeast shore. The plan is surrounded by a keyboard style border. Jakob van der Schley was a skilled draftsman and engraver who operated out of Amsterdam and had strong ties with the Hague. He was trained by Bernard Picart and his style resembles that of the elder man. Van der Schley was known for intricately engraved portraits and frontispieces. He signed most of the plates used in the Hague edition of the Abbe Prevost's Histoire generale
