17th-century ornithological engraving from the greatest natural history artist of his age.
Nicolas Robert (18 April 1614 – 25 March 1685) was a French miniaturist and engraver. He was born in Langres and died in Paris.
The composition of this engraving shows a significant improvement on the vélins that Robert produced for the French King: the subjects are shown within a fully-realised landscape giving it a vivacity that is often lacking from ornithological work where only a single bird or pose is shown.
