This rare antique engraving was published in the series: 'Historiae Naturalis De Avibus Libri VI' by John Johnston, published and engraved by Matthias Merian in 1657.

Matthaus Merian was from a long lineage of printers, artists and superb engravers.

Matthaeus Merian senior (1593 – 1650) was the printer and father of the Matthaeus Merian brothers junior (1621 - 1687), Kaspar Merian (1627) and their sister María Sibylla Merian (1647 - 1717), the latter from his second marriage to a Dutch woman.

Sibylla was firstly an entomologist and a great draftswoman, painter and engraver of plants and insects her work is in the botanical section. Issued on fine watermarked laid paper.

Wear consistent with age and use. Very good condition with a light hue consistent with its age. Lightest of offsetting to lower margin.
