In the fall of 1833, Leu was appointed professor of theology at the Lucerne Theological College. He initially taught dogmatics, apologetics, patristics and symbolism, and later mainly church history. Because of his opposition to the Jesuits, he was dismissed from the teaching post in 1845, but received his teaching post back in 1847.
From 1844 Leu published regularly in the Luzerner Volksblatt. He also published specialist theological literature and pamphlets, some of which appeared under a pseudonym. His work Warnung vor Neuerungen und Uebertreibungen in der katholischen Kirche Deutschlands, published in 1853, was put on the index a year after publication.
