Very rare map of Europe, published in the Schweitzer Chronik. The map is a derivative of the earlier map by Sebastian Münster, but is much rarer and far more sought after because of the fine decorations.

THIS IS THE VERY RARE FIRST ISSUE.

38.8 x 45.5 cm overall size of leaf. Centerfold as issued.

Very early wood cut printed map of Europe with South to the top. In the lower left corner are Poland, Livonia and parts of England and Ireland in the lower right corner. Portugal and the tip of Africa in upper right and Sardinia, Sicily and Peloponnesus in upper right too left.

The seas are filled with sea monsters and sailing ships. According to van der Heijden after the map of Europe by Waldseemüller-Münster. Originally included in "Landtaflen. Hierinn findst du lieber Läser schöner recht und wolgemachter Landtaflen XII namlich ein Allgemeine Europae demnach etlich besondere als dess Tütschenlands Franckreychs und der allgemeinen Eygnoschafft. . ." The maps are prepared by Johannes Stumpf (1500-1576) and engraved by Heinrich I. Vogtherr (1490-1556) from Strassburg.

Light age toning to outer margins. Overall very good condition.

Fine 16th Century woodcut map of Northern Switzerland including the towns of Zofingen, Rhinfelden, Stein am Rhein, Mellingen, etc. Stumpf, Johannes [1500-1577] Extremely RARE FIRST ISSUE of 1548 (the map was reprinted in 1587 and 1606, both on much inferior paper and different title). Size: 36 x 22.3 cm Most unusual in that the map is facing south. Scarce map from Stumpf's Schweytzer Chronick. Later hand colour. Very good overall condition.
