ORIGINAL MASTER ENGRAVING

Giovanni Battista Falda (1643-1678). Published by G. J. Rossi, Rome Italy - 1676

Giovanni Battista Falda was an etcher born in Valduggia; specialist in topography, worked in Rome for Giovanni Giacomo de'Rossi (qv for his main series of views of Rome), who chose him out of Bernini's studio at the age of 14 in 1657, and trained him as an architectural etcher. When Falda died aged 35, he left Rossi as guardian of his daughter.

The Fontana dell'Acqua Paola also known as Il Fontanone ("The big fountain") is a monumental fountain located on the Janiculum Hill, near the church of San Pietro in Montorio, in Rome, Italy. It was built in 1612 to mark the end of the Acqua Paola aqueduct, restored by Pope Paul V, and took its name from him. It was the first major fountain on the right bank of the River Tiber.

Fine hand colour. Excellent impression.
