Morel-Fatio (Rouen 1810 – Paris 1871) was born into a family of bankers, was first trained in the art of navigation aboard an English merchant ship before he joined the parental bank. However, he turned to the arts and successfully showed his work ‘The Conquest of Algeria’ at the Salon in 1833. In 1838 he was entrusted by Horace Vernet with the execution of the ‘Battle of San Juan de Ulúa’ and voyages to Constantinople accompanying Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, future Napoleon III.
