Johann Nepomuk Strixner was one of the first German lithographer. Based in Munich most of career spent on major series of reproductive plates of early German paintings and drawings: the Munich collection, and the Boisserée collection.
Adriaen Brouwer (1605/6-1638) was a Flemish Baroque painter who specialised in genre scenes, particularly in taverns. He favoured humble, unkempt peasants engaged in various activities, from drunken brawls to fireside chats.
The oil painting after which this lithograph was produced is held at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich [no.581].
Exceedingly rare.
