1829 Lesson del.; Coutant sc. HUMMINGBIRD Hand coloured L’Arlequin - Ornithology
Published as part of the scarce series: Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux-Mouches, 1829-32.
Research for the work was undertaken by Rene Lesson during his time as a botanist on Duperrey’s voyage of La Coquille in 1822-1825. Preceding Gould’s monograph on hummingbirds in 1849, this these beautifully hand coloured engravings and partly colour printed plates are part of the earliest and most comprehensive work on the species.
