'Carte réduite de la Mer du Sud.. Gereduceerde kaart van de Zuider-zee..'
1753
358 x 215 mm / 14.1 x 8.5 inches
Rare map of the Pacific. Partial outline of Australia, Nouvelle Zeelande, Nouvelle Guinee, North America and the west coast of South America. With title in French and Dutch in lower margin, engraved by J.van Schley.
An important map of Australia and New Zealand. Australia is attached to New Guinea and Tasmania attached to the mainland. The east coast is entirely imaginary. New Zealand includes only its western coast in an incomplete fashion. This map is remarkable in its historical significance, undertaken just before the commencement of a campaign by the English and French to explore and map Oceana and the South Pacific. Extends from the Marianas and Carolines to the Coast of America, including Baja California, the Gulf of Mexico, Central America and the much of South America, including the Straits of Magellan and Cape Horn.
Very good condition and attractive hand colour. Tiny paper fault restored (unnoticeable).
