Published for the Oxford Almanac for the Year 1774. As such this firn and very rare engraving has been cut down from the Broadside.

Rare example of the first state issued for the Oxford Almanac.

Printed on thick wove paper.

Trimmed to edges. Centrefold (as issued?) with small tear repaired. Please view images.

The Oxford Almanack has been published by Oxford University Press since 1674. The Almanack is one of a series of broadsides commissioned from the Oxford University Press who originally held the national monopoly on publishing almanacs. The engravings are a sequence done by brilliant engravers such as, Basire, Vertue and the Rookers and James Basire.

A reduced version of this engraving was published in 1819 and again in the 1860s.

Michael Angelo Rooker (1746 - 1801) was a British painter and engraver. He was taught by his father Edward Rooker (1724 - 1774), who was a printmaker as well, and Paul Sandby at the St. Martin's Lane school in London. In 1770 he was elected an associate of the Royal Academy. He is best known for providing engravings for the Copperplate Magazine (1776 - 1777), its successor The Virtuosi's Museum, and the Oxford Almanack. Rooker was also chief scene-painter at the Haymarket Theatre in London. JMW Turner claimed to have learnt the painting technique 'colour scaling' by copying Rooker's Gatehouse at Battle Abbey. After Rooker's death, Turner purchased over a dozen of his paintings.
